Moi j'aime le cinéma! A French film festival poster with these words has graced my study for a good decade or so. Actually, my love for cinema was born even earlier, while I was a child actor in two of Mrinal Sen's films - Punascha and Abasheshe - neither of which is now available for screening. Later, in adult years, I became involved with cinema again through work in short films, of which The Magic Loom - a portrayal of the Balucharee silk weavers of Bengal- holds special memories for me. Much later, yet another breeze blew into my sails when the well-known director, Aparna Sen, expressed an interest in filming The Japanese Wife. Although I've never written stories or novels with an eye towards cinema, I've been struck by the magic of that journey - from words to celluloid.
